His father, Edward Bridge Danson Jr. (March 22, 1916, to November 30, 2000) was an archaeologist, and his mother, Jessica MacMaster (November 2, 1916, to January 11, 2006) was a homemaker.

Danson grew up in Flagstaff, Arizona, next to his older sister Jan Ann Haury and attended Kent School. He later went to Stanford University but transferred to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, and in 1972 he graduated in the theatre with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.
