He was born to Robert Fitzgerald Williams and Laurie McLaurin in Chicago as one of his three children. His father worked as a senior executive at the Ford Motor Company, while his mother was a former model. He was of mixed ancestry.

His family moved to Michigan when he was a child, and he joined Detroit Country Day School there. He was a perfect student, and he also played sports.

He was an introvert and spent a great deal of time alone playing with his toys. As both parents worked, the lonely child was amused by his imagination.
